Fall Yard Cleanup Checklist

Fall around Katy and Sealy sneaks up on you. One week it's still hot, the next you're stepping over leaves and wondering when the flower beds got so messy. The good news is that a little work now makes your yard look better all winter and gives it a cleaner start in spring. Here's the checklist we'd use on our own yards.

1. Walk the yard first

Before you grab a rake, take ten minutes and walk the whole property. Look for leaf piles, branches that came down in storms, beds full of debris, shrubs that have grown out of shape and any low or damaged tree limbs. Jot it down. It's a lot easier to plan a Saturday when you know exactly what's out there.

2. Stay ahead of the leaves

Don't wait for every leaf to drop before you clean up. A thick, wet layer of leaves sitting on your grass blocks sunlight and holds moisture against the lawn. Blowing or raking every week or two keeps it manageable and keeps your yard looking cared for. Don't forget driveways, walkways and the gutters on the curb side, where leaves pile up and get slick after rain.

3. Keep mowing while the grass is growing

Grass slows down in fall, but it doesn't stop right away. Keep the lawn on a regular schedule as long as it's growing, and don't suddenly cut it much shorter than usual heading into winter. A clean cut, crisp edges along the sidewalk and driveway, and clippings blown off the hard surfaces make the whole yard look finished.

4. Clean out the flower beds

Beds collect leaves, twigs and dead growth all fall. Clear that out, pull any obvious weeds and re-cut the bed edges so there's a clean line between bed and lawn. It's one of the fastest ways to make a yard look sharp.

5. Refresh the mulch

Once the beds are clean, add a fresh layer of mulch. It makes beds look finished, helps hold moisture and keeps weeds down through the cooler months. Keep mulch pulled back a little from the base of plants and tree trunks rather than piling it up against them.

6. Trim shrubs lightly

Fall is a good time to tidy up shrubs and hedges that have gotten shaggy, but keep it to light shaping. Many gardeners save heavy pruning for late winter, so plants aren't pushed into new growth right before a cold snap. Cut back anything rubbing against the house, blocking a walkway or covering a window.

7. Deal with dead or hanging limbs

Storm season leaves behind cracked and hanging branches. Those are worth taking care of before winter weather, especially over the roof, the driveway or play areas. If it's high up or near a power line, leave it to a pro.

8. Ease up on the sprinklers

As the weather cools, lawns usually need less water than they did in summer. Check your sprinkler timer and adjust it, and turn off a zone if it's spraying the street or sidewalk.

9. Plan where the debris is going

This is the step people forget. Bags of leaves, piles of branches and the stuff you pulled out of the garage add up quickly, and curbside pickup rules vary by city and neighborhood. If you're doing a big cleanup or combining it with a garage or shed cleanout, a roll-off bin in the driveway makes it a one-weekend job instead of a month of overflowing trash cans.

10. Do a final curb-appeal check

Before Thanksgiving guests show up, stand at the street and look at your house the way a visitor would. Clean edges, fresh mulch, a cut lawn and a clear walkway make a bigger difference than anything else.
